What Leads To Slow Computer Performance?
When a computer starts working slower than it did before, there can be a few different causes. Most of them are not a big problem, and can be fixed easily. But sometimes, the slow down is just a symptom of something far worse. This is what I am going to talk about in this article.
If your computer has recently become very slow, and you have not just installed some new software, the chances are that there is a malware infection.
Malware is a name given to malicious software that is designed to harm your computer or to cause trouble to you, the user. Viruses and worms are the oldest types of malware, but there are also trojans, backdoors, rootkits, spyware and adware.
Most often the infection will come about as a result of files that you have downloaded or shared. They can be in the form of .exe files, or they can be hiding in other files that you would not suspect.
These types of infection can be avoided by using common sense and observing safe practices. But there is a different type of malware that can infect computers, one which you cannot avoid because it does not depend on unsafe behaviours to spread. I am referring to the so called drive-by infection. This is an infection spread from a site to your computer automatically, without any action on your part.
Sometimes the website is actually an innocent victim of an infection, having been attacked by a different method. Once the infection has taken root, it will begin spreading to anyone who accesses the site.
As soon as the infection has reached your computer, it can start causing damage. At the very least, this means that your computer’s performance will be worsened. But it can be a lot more serious, with files being damaged, and personal data being stolen. This software has been used to steal billions of dollars from innocent users over the years, so it can definitely hurt you personally.
I apologise if this sounds frightening, but it’s better to be informed than to be ignorant, especially where your financial well being is concerned. As long as you use Antivirus software, update your operating system and browser whenever a new update comes along, and avoid dangerous (and possibly illegal) downloads, you will be safe.
